Atacama CSP 1 & 2 – Chile

Cerro Dominador Solar Thermal Plant 110 MW

Atacama CSP Project Abstract

Cerro Dominador is a 110MW concentrated solar power plant (CSP) being developed by Abengoa. The plant is situated in the commune of María Elena, in the Antofagasta region, Atacama Desert, Chile. The programme intends to promote Chile's economic development and reduce dependency on coal and natural gas, while attempting to produce 20% of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2025. The molten salt technology used in the plant will have the capacity of storing electricity for up to 18 hours, allowing continuous storage and transmission, which will generate electricity 24 hours a day. This technology uses a series of mirrors (heliostats) that track the sun on two axes, concentrating the solar radiation on a receiver on the upper part of the tower, where the heat is transferred to molten salts. The molten salts then transfer their heat in a heat exchanger to water, generating superheated steam, which feeds a turbine that transforms the kinetic energy of the steam into electric energy. Within this project, Doosan Skoda Power will supply two steam turbines and auxiliaries.
